Job description

As a Mud Engineer, you will be responsible for monitoring and managing drilling fluid systems during drilling, workover, and well intervention activities. You will advise on the correct fluid properties, perform checks and calculations, and ensure that the mud system supports safe and efficient operations.

Your work is both analytical and hands-on. You will interpret operational data, identify potential risks, and provide practical recommendations to improve performance and prevent problems such as wellbore instability, fluid losses, contamination, or pressure-related issues. You will work closely with drilling teams, well engineers, supervisors, and service providers to ensure that every operation is properly supported from a fluids perspective.

Your activities include:

  • Monitoring, testing, and optimising drilling fluid properties during well operations
  • Advising on mud programmes for drilling, workover, and plug & abandonment activities
  • Supporting safe well control by maintaining the correct fluid density and properties
  • Identifying and troubleshooting fluid-related issues during operations
  • Preparing daily reports, fluid calculations, and technical documentation
  • Coordinating with service providers and operational teams on mud system performance
  • Supporting cost control by reducing waste, optimising chemical usage, and improving efficiency
  • Contributing to after-action reviews and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Researching new technologies, additives, and fluid systems that can improve operational performance

What you bring

You are technically strong, safety-focused, and able to make sound decisions in a demanding operational environment. You understand the importance of accurate monitoring, clear communication, and proactive problem-solving during well operations.

You bring:

  • A completed Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Mud Engineer, Drilling Fluids Engineer, or in a similar wellsite fluids role
  • Strong knowledge of drilling fluids, fluid testing, rheology, hydraulics, and wellbore stability
  • Experience with drilling, workover, or plug & abandonment operations
  • Understanding of well control principles and operational safety standards
  • Experience with fluid calculations, reporting, and technical documentation
  • Ability to work closely with engineers, supervisors, and operational teams
  • Strong communication skills in English and Afrikaans
  • Willingness to relocate to the Netherlands and learn Dutch
  • Valid driver’s license
