Electrical Engineer

Almelo, the Netherlands 40 hours Full-time €4,357 - €5,500 per month

As an Electrical Engineer, you will help keep the regional energy grid in the east of the Netherlands safe, reliable and ready for the future. Based in Almelo, you will work on the technical backbone of medium and high voltage substations, making sure that every drawing, diagram and change to the network is accurate and up to date. With the energy transition putting more pressure on the grid every year, your work has a direct impact on thousands of homes and businesses in the region. This is a role for an engineer who enjoys precision and wants to grow within the Dutch energy sector. You will work closely with maintenance and project teams, translating changes in the field into clear and correct technical documentation, while building your knowledge of European standards and grid operator requirements.

Description

You will be part of the engineering team responsible for the technical documentation of the client’s substations and distribution network. When a station is modified, extended or upgraded, you make sure the documentation reflects the situation in the field. In practice, this means maintaining and updating single line diagrams, wiring diagrams and layout drawings, and revising and standardising drawings in ELCAD, EPLAN and AutoCAD.

You will work side by side with maintenance crews and project teams to process system changes, and you will be the person they can rely on for correct and complete drawings. Alongside this, you will:

  • Check designs and documentation against technical standards and grid operator requirements
  • Support quality processes and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards
  • Contribute to engineering projects for new and upgraded substations and cable connections
  • Help improve and standardise documentation processes within the team

Requirements

You are precise, structured and curious about how energy networks work. You communicate easily with both engineers and technicians in the field, and you take ownership of your work. You enjoy working in a team, but you are also comfortable managing your own tasks and priorities.

You bring:

  • A completed Bachelor’s degree (BEng or BTech) in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a specialisation in power or energy systems
  • At least 1 year of experience in electrical engineering, design or documentation, ideally within a utility, grid operator or consulting engineering environment
  • Knowledge of medium and/or high voltage substations and power distribution
  • Hands-on experience with ELCAD, EPLAN and/or AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with calculations such as cable sizing and voltage drop is an advantage
  • Fluency in English and Afrikaans, and a willingness to learn Dutch
  • Valid driver’s license (Code B)
  • CHS certification or SACPCMP registration (or willingness to obtain a Dutch safety certificate)

View all frequently asked questions
How does health insurance work in the Netherlands?

In the Netherlands, you are required to have health insurance, which covers essential services such as doctor visits, hospital care and medications. Health insurance costs about €150 per month. Employ IR offers independent experts to help you choose a health insurer, and the government ensures that all insurers offer the same basic coverage. There is an annual deductible, but most basic care is covered. For a referral to a specialist, you first visit your family doctor. Additional insurance is also available for extras such as dentistry or physical therapy. The system is accessible and guarantees quality care for everyone.

How long does the relocation process take?

After you sign your contract with Employ IR, the process usually takes about 6-8 weeks before you are in the Netherlands. However, this depends on factors beyond our control, such as the workload at the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service).

What documents do I need to move to the Netherlands?

Everyone participating in the relocation process needs a passport and an unabridged birth certificate (with apostille). If you are married and want to bring your partner to the Netherlands, you also need a marriage certificate (with apostille). If you are in a long-term relationship but not married, you and your partner must both provide a declaration of marital impediment (with apostille). The unabridged birth certificates, marriage certificates and declarations of impediment to marriage can be obtained from the Department of Home Affairs. Apostilles can be obtained from DIRCO.

Can I use my South African driving licence in the Netherlands?

Yes, if you have applied for the 30% ruling, you can use your South African driving licence for the first six months. It is important that you convert your South African driving licence to a Dutch driving licence at your municipality after your 30% ruling has been approved. If you do not convert your driving licence within the first six months, it will become invalid and you will have to take a driving test again in the Netherlands.

How much does it cost to move to the Netherlands through Employ IR?

In short, very little.

More comprehensive: Employ IR covers all costs related to your move, except for expenses incurred in South Africa, such as for your personal documents and other personal items.
